“EDUCATION is mostly about institutions and getting tickets stamped; LEARNING is what we do for ourselves.”
~ Thomas C. Foster, How to Read Literature Like a Professor (emphasis mine)
On Monday, I will celebrate the dawn of my 24th year in education. Three days of in-service preparation are behind me. Open house took place last night. The room is ready; the lessons prepared. All I lack are young minds still brimming with curiosity, students willing to explore the transcendent truths authors have struggled with for generations, students longing to take learning into their own hands. Like these young children in China re-enacting an ancient ceremony celebrating the beginning of school and learning how to write, may our students enter our rooms with a fresh realization of the timeless ritual of learning in which they are more than passive receptors, but active participants in their journey to erudition and wholeness.
